Surprised to find this fresh water clam or mussel? during a macro-invertebrate survey of MacNeil's Pond in Charlottetown.

I did some google searching that led to this freshwater mussel that looked similar to what you found: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/natureplus/message/17665
Then I looked up genus Anodonta and it looks like 'Eastern Floater' is the one found in our neck of the woods, so that's what I'm going with.

That is the one I thought it looked most like from this site:
http://www.saa-aprse.ca/projects/fish-projects/freshwater-mussels-inventory/
but they describe it as rare (and finding something common is most likely) but they maybe only in New Brunswick?
Could it be the Eastern Elliptio which is ranked as common?

You're probably right, but since we're not sure I'll put it as a Freshwater Mussel, Family: Unionidae.
